The nonprofit, Animal Alliance Network, helped to hold twice-a-week “pig vigils” almost uninterrupted for the past seven years in front of this meat processing plant.

Pigs are considered the fifth most intelligent animal, often times smarter than dogs and young children. When it comes to animals, the only meaningful difference between those we consider companions and those we eat is our treatment of them.

It is estimated that 2 billion pigs are raised for slaughter worldwide and 1.2 billion are slaughtered every year worldwide. At the particular facility that was shut down in Vernon, California, there were 10,000 pigs killed every day that they slaughter.

Activists gather one last time in February of 2023 outside Farmer John meat processing plant in California the last day it was to take delivery of pigs for slaughter. It was an unexpected end to an unlikely relationship between a pork empire and animal rights activists. 

The animal agriculture industry is cruel, wastes extraordinary amounts of water, and contributes

animal protein dangerssignificantly to global warming, among other environmental problems. Plus, animals are often pumped up with antibiotics, because industrial farms are so unhealthy. Additionally, animal protein is high in saturated fat, cholesterol, and calories. Eating it has been linked to higher rates of heart disease, certain types of cancer, type 2 diabetes, and stroke.
