This year you need to make self-care a non-negotiable part of your life. Weaving self-care into your daily routine can give your mental health and weight-loss efforts a boost. Focusing on your own health, well-being and personal needs is self-care— and it is an essential part of the weight-loss equation.

If you stick with it, these healthy habits will provide long term results.

Here are three self-care tips I wish I knew sooner

  1. Meal plan: I should have been planning my meals in advance instead of skipping meals in an effort to lose weight. Skipping meals leads to unbalanced blood sugars, cravings and potential weight gain.
  2. Prioritize Sleep: I should have put quality sleep as a priority instead of managing my time poorly and staying up late for no necessary reason. Ideally we should get between 7-9 hours of good sleep. Sleep impacts our mood, hormones and cravings.
  3. Manage Stress: I should have learned how to control my stress instead of ignoring the fact that stress plays a role in weight gain. Cortisol, a hormone released during times of stress, is coursing through most of our veins, which can make fat loss very difficult. Unmanaged stress can trigger hunger hormones, cravings and lead to overeating.

We plan and prioritize so many things in our lives but when it comes to simple self care acts such as eating balanced meals consistently or getting enough sleep…we don’t make the time or even consider it a top priority.

While there are times in life that make achieving your goals more challenging than others it is so important to not use time as an excuse. And here’s why:

  • Fueling your body is a form of self care and if you can’t find the time to fuel your self effectively then you will not prioritize it  until it’s too late- when you see negative affects your health.
  • Rather than focusing on how busy you are which turns into stress, create an action plan about what can be controlled.
  • You have to eat daily. Why not try to make a few small tweaks to the meals you’re already eating to align with your goals?
  • Weight loss shouldn’t stress you out when you approach it the right way! It can fit into your busy life
